Whately half-marathon raises money for cancer program

WHATELY - Last year, when Susan Monahan of Whately organized a half-marathon to benefit Cancer Connection, she raised close to $2,000.

This year, she's hoping to double the amount participants bring in for the Northampton nonprofit organization, which offers programs and services free of charge to those living with cancer and to their families and caregivers.

'Clean Sweep' for bulky waste to be held May 12

Want to get rid of that old furniture, bald tires or dead appliances?

The regional trash district is holding a "Clean Sweep" bulky waste collection on May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon.

BOOK SALE: Thousands of donated used books will be available for purchase on the Town Common at the League of Women Voters' 64th annual book sale this weekend. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Categories include cookbooks, children's books, fiction, history, foreign languages, gardening and sports.

CANCER BENEFIT: Katelynn's Ride will take place June 3 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hampshire College. Katelynn's Ride participants are comprised of all ages and skill levels who choose between riding 10, 25, 50, or 100 mile loops. The post-ride celebration will include a barbecue, entertainment by Cottonwood, and activities for families.

Whately pays off bond on Water Department

WHATELY - The town's Water Department is now self-sustaining, thanks to an enterprise fund created by Town Meeting vote Tuesday.

Whately Town Meeting agenda includes $4.3 million budget

WHATELY - When voters convene at their annual Town Meeting tonight they'll be asked to establish a Water Department Enterprise Fund and approve an operating budget of $4,257,648 for the next bookkeeping year, which begins July 1.

SUPPLY COLLECTION: Easthampton High School's baseball team is planning a medical supply collection Saturday. All supplies will be donated to Dr. Mark Bigda for his upcoming trip to Haiti. Items that will be accepted include children's vitamins, Tylenol, Advil, anti-bacterial ointments, anti-itch creams, calamine lotions, bandages, gauze, medical tape and more. All items must be new and in original, sealed packaging. The collection will be held at the Municipal Offices at 50 Payson Ave. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The team members will also hold a car wash.
