Lions Club honors 'angel on wheels'

Longtime Meals on Wheels driver George Perreault has been named Citizen of the Year by the South Hadley Lions Club.

Perreault, who is 88, was given the award at the May 12 annual Town Meeting by Lions Club President Janice DeToma.

Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren focuses on gay rights, student loans

NORTHAMPTON - Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren seized on the issues of gay rights and student loans during campaign appearances Saturday in Northampton. "If I am blessed to be your senator in Washington ... I won't just be a good vote," Warren told a crowd organizers estimated at 20,000 at the Three-County Fairgrounds for the Noho Pride march and rally. "I want to be a good leader." She pledged to fight to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and to ensure that gay, transgender and bisexual people have equal opportunities for work and schooling.

South Hadley Town Meeting takes up $40.5 million budget, lease of smokestack

SOUTH HADLEY - Town Meeting voters Saturday will weigh in on a proposed $40.5 million budget for next year, a request to lease space on a school building smokestack for a wireless antenna, and 35 other agenda items.

The annual Town Meeting is set to start at 9 a.m. in the Town Hall auditorium with 37 articles on the warrant.
