With a dose of humor, Hampshire College graduates urged to 'occupy'

AMHERST - The Hampshire College graduating class of 2012 roared with laughter Saturday as commencement speaker Eugene Mirman - an alumnus and comedian - jokingly stereotyped them. "Congratulations, you very accomplished hipsters and self-righteous hippies," he said, quipping, "You did it: graduating from Hampshire is neither easy nor recommended." Mirman's witty, self-deprecating humor made for a somewhat unorthodox commencement address, so it fit perfectly with the rest of the ceremony, which every year defies the traditional pomp and circumstance of most college graduations.

Hampshire inauguration speaker Al Gore calls for 'American spring'

AMHERST — Al Gore marked the inauguration of Jonathan Lash as Hampshire College’s sixth president on Friday with a call for "an American spring." "We need to occupy democracy," the 45th vice president of the United States told a crowd of several hundred who gathered at the South Amherst campus to celebrate the occasion. Speaking from notes, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee issued a stinging rebuke of the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which extended First Amendment rights to corporations.
