    The Amherst Regional ultimate program put its stamp on the first Northeastern Championships Sunday.

    The girls and boys teams combined to outscore the competition 166-34 as they swept the titles at Rogers Field in Devens. The girls team beat Watchung Hills 13-7, while the boys squad topped Needham 13-2.

    Aiden Barrett scattered seven hits and struck out seven in a complete-game 7-2 victory by the Hopkins Academy baseball team at Athol Saturday.

    Evan Delaney had three hits, two RBIs and a home run, while Ethan Wenner added two hits and an RBI for the Golden Hawks (7-5, 7-4 Hampshire).

    The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will add a big man to close out its 2012 recruiting class.

    The Minutemen have also added a transfer guard.

    Isaac Freeman, a 7-foot-1, 215-pound center from Manassas, Va., who played at South Kent (Conn.) Prep this year, announced Monday that he chose UMass over Drexel after taking an official visit in Amherst this weekend.

    The Hurricanes pounded out 13 runs on 13 hits en route to a 13-5 win over defending Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament champion Minnechaug Regional last week at Stan Ziomek Field.

    UMass freshman Quianna Diaz-Patterson and senior Sara Plourde were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, Monday.

    Diaz-Patterson hit .643 with an on-base percentage of .706 and a slugging percentage of 1.071. The shortstop from Amherst also collected at least one hit, one run and one RBI in all five games.

    Diaz-Patterson drove in the eventual game-winning run in Tuesday's 5-4 win over Rhode Island and scored the eventual game winners in both games against Charlotte on Sunday.

    The Amherst Regional baseball team lost a 3-2 thriller to Brattleboro (Vt.) in extra innings last week despite a dominant pitching performance by starter Michael Walkowicz.

    Walkowicz struck out 15 and allowed one earned run on four hits over seven innings before he was taken out because of a high pitch count at Amherst.

    Aiden Barrett and the Hopkins Academy baseball team overcame a rough first inning that forced them to dig out of a three-run hole to earn a 5-3 win over Turners Falls at home Friday.

    Barrett allowed three runs, none earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out nine in the complete-game effort for the Golden Hawks (4-4, 4-3 Hampshire).

    Brie Cook's third hit and fourth RBI broke the game open in the ninth inning and kept the Frontier Regional softball team perfect with a 7-3 win over Hopkins Academy in Hadley Friday.

    Cook singled home Katelyn Wood to give the Red Hawks (9-0, 8-0 Franklin) the lead and Frontier posted two more insurance runs.
